Get to know our educator, Genesis Buckhalter-Horne! Located in Tucson, AZ.

Q: Why are you a birthworker?

A: In short, because I love health education.

Q: What are some of your other passions?

A: Education and health equity

Q: What inspired you to teach Dare to Birth?

A: I got my masters in public health and dreamed of being a comprehensive sex educator. My interests throughout grad school were health education, sexual health and birth. So when I found DTB I was drawn in because of the mission and values. I think in one of my first conversations with Alex I just started rambling about health equity and advocacy and birth.

In the birth work world, there are a lot of strong feelings about existing in the binary. I love how what Alex has created sets fire to that and honors all journeys.

Q: What's one piece of advice you'd like to share with expecting parents?

A: You are exactly the parent your baby needs. You aren't inadequate and you don't need to know ~everything~ and you also need REST.

Q: What's one baby item you recommend to everyone?

A: Some sort of baby carrier! being hands free is such a gift when you have a tiny human to snuggle 24/7.

Q: Is there a motto or philosophy that guides your life? How did you come to adopt it?

A: As a kid, my mom would always tell me "say what you mean and mean what you say" and "your voice in the only thing nobody can ever take from you" both of these things have guided me throughout the years, reminding me that I have permission to take up space and say what other people may not say. say the thing, even if only one person connects. say. the. thing.

Q: What is something we wouldn’t know by looking at you?

A: My "day job" is being a high school English teacher! also, I have like 12 chickens, 2 dogs and 1 tortoise.

Q: If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

A: Brave New World?? Long Way Down?? I'm an English teacher; there are just too many choices
